On this program, the orchestra will perform Igor Stravinskys Suite from Firebird ballet, Jessie Montgomerys brilliant Starburst, the world premiere of. Klaus Mäkelä opens the concert with an exciting work by his young compatriot, Sauli Zinovjev. It is one of a number of Russian stories featuring the mythical Firebird. Among the first recorded versions of the story is by Alexander Afanasyev from the mid-19 th century. Stravinsky’s magnificent score was deeply rooted in Russian folk song and opera, while also discovering new colors and rhythms. Later, when Ivan is taken captive by Kaschei, the feather summons the Firebird who helps defeat the tyrant. After the premiere, Serge Rachmaninoff allegedly exclaimed, ‘Great God! What a work of genius this is! This is true Russia!’ Instead of the shorter suite which is usually performed in concert, the Concertgebouw Orchestra will perform the complete ballet score.īefore the interval, we will have the opportunity to witness the world première of Alexander Raskatov’s Oboe Concerto, composed for the Concertgebouw Orchestra and its principal oboist, Alexei Ogrintchouk. The Firebird, The Horse of Power and the Princess Vasilissa is a hero’s quest with a difference, and it is a tale beloved of many storytellers. The Firebird is captured by Prince Ivan, and it gives him an enchanted feather in return for its freedom. Now he leads the orchestra in The Firebird, the colourful ballet music which marked Igor Stravinsky’s international breakthrough. His brilliant debut in 2020 prompted the Concertgebouw Orchestra to invite him back several times. Klaus Mäkelä is without a doubt one of the most talented and visionary conductors of our time. ![]()
